UK PM Johnson outmaneuvers anti-Brexit MPS by suspending parliament

In what Commons Speaker John Bercow called a “constitutional outrage,” UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on the Queen at Balmoral on Wednesday and obtained her consent to suspend parliament until Oct. 14, two weeks ahead of the Oct. 31 deadline for Britain to quit the European Union. Politicians on both sides of the Brexit debate call this a coup that thwarted their plan to legislate a law banning a no-deal Brexit, after Johnson declared that Britain would leave Europe on the assigned date, with or without a deal.
