Pompeo warns countdown beginning for arms sales to Iran

“Western allies have 15 months to unify against Iran before the regime is free to buy and sell weapons under the 2015 nuclear deal,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Tuesday in a speech to the UN Security Council. Next year, the UN arms embargo on Iran and travel restrictions on IRGC Gen. Qassem Soleimani expire. “Soon after that, Tehran will be free to sell weapons to anyone, including its terrorist proxies,” Pompeo said, adding that countries like Russia and China will be able to sell Iran tanks, missiles and air defense equipment. “All this would start a new Middle East arms race and further destabilize the region,” the top US diplomat warned.
