Israeli Patriot missile downs Hizballah drone over Quneitra

An Israeli air force Patriot missile Tuesday shot down an Iran-made Hizballah drone over the Syrian border town of Quneitra in the demilitarized zone. The UAV took off from Damascus air port. The IAF first scrambled fighter jets, before launching the missile from a site near the Galilee town of Safed.
“Israel will not allow Iran, Hizballah or other forces to infiltrate or approach its territory in the Golan Heights,” the IDF Spokesperson said in a statement.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report: This was the first time an IDF missile had intercepted a Hizballah drone in Syrian air space. In the past, fighter jets found it hard to down drones entering Golan air space and ended up shooting a Patriot missile. Hizballah’s purpose in sending the drone was apparently to test the state of readiness of IDF air defenses in northern Israel – but no less to see how the Russians would react when an Israeli UAV flew over a Russian-US de-escalation zone in southern Syria, that is under Russian surveillance.

This is hilarious. You are rich enough to throw patriots at UAVs? Not for long, no matter how rich you are.

A Patriot is $4,000,000 minimum. That UAV, perhaps $10,000 max. I can build em’ way cheaper, but I fly quads for fun.

The Patriot was probably the closest available asset that has a fire control radar to down a UAV.

So how many patriot missiles does Israel have to waste on drones? When you get low on Patriot missiles from shooting drones, then they send something more substantial.

Don’t the Israeli’s know how to use the 20mm canon on F-15/F-16’s to down a drone without sucking up the debris in the fighters intakes? Thats about the cheapest weapon available.

Let hope Israel stop invading Lebanese and Syrian airspace otherwise they will be downed soon or later! Zero tolerance for both side!

Enventually and hopefully soon the Israelis get tires of the rhetoric and verbal diarrhea spewing out of the Iranian and hezbollahs looser who hide behind human shield and simply destroy them all

The world will be a better places with Hezbollah and the radicals Iranians. I’m a Jew and I have Iranian friends and they too want to radicals who run their country gone for good

How will the IDF react if and when Hizzbollah/Iran send multiple drones at once – launch multiple Patriots? A drone is very expendable – patriot missiles not so much.

Let IDF do what they know best because drones serves as spies when launching attacks from enemies. There is a saying which says destroy an enemy before it attacks

Amazed that some would criticize Israel for shooting down this drone because of “expense”!
The UAV was intended either to gather military intelligence on Israel or to inflict damage on Israel.
Please tell us, how would you have stopped it?

No , it is not cost effective , it is like killing a fly with rifle bullets . What if the number of flies was in thousand ?

Why not simply attack the airbase that these drones take off from? Or, why not the Iron Dome instead of the Patriot. Better yet, find the factory in Iran that assembles them and destroy the source.

The Patriots was probably the closest available asset with the capability to down the drone. Iron done would be ideal but they probably didn’t have any in the area at the time. Destroying these factories would be like playing whack a mole.

I don’t think Israel is bothered about the price of Patriots as she is receiving them for free from US! They will think twice if they had to pay for them.
