German Chancellor to receive Haifa University award
Chancellor Angela Merkel visits Israel next month to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy from Haifa University in recognition of her “leadership in the advance of equality, freedom and human rights and as an example to women the world over.” The University announced Wednesday that tribute will also be paid the chancellor for promoting “deep friendship and close ties between Germany and the State of Israel.” This is a great privilege for Haifa University, its President Prof. Ron Rubin noted. The award ceremony takes place in Jerusalem on Oct. 4. Chancellor Merkel will also meet the university’s Jewish, Arab and German students and lead a discussion on “Education for Democracy in the 21st Century: Theory and Practice.”
