debkafile takes exception to the furious focus on a past war by the State Comptroller – the post mortem of any conflict will always pick at faults – when the new menaces staring Israel in the face should be at the forefront of the national discourse.

DEBKAfile Special Report May 6, 2016
The exchanges of fire between the IDF and Hamas in the Gaza border area during the last few days has rattled the terrorist organization, making it fire mortar shells, rockets and light weapons at IDF forces in the area. The firing that intensifies each time that the troops approach a tunnel, or one of its apparatuses, is helping the IDF locate the openings of the tunnels
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 11, 2016
Israel has started testing a secret new weapon for defeating the tunnel systems, which the Palestinian Hamas and Hizballah are busy digging for surprise attacks against Israel. Western sources reported Friday, March 11, that the new weapon, dubbed the “Underground Iron Dome,” can detect a tunnel, then send in a moving missile to blow it up.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report February 9, 2016
Few Israelis, including the people who wake up at night to the clatter of Gaza Palestinians digging tunnels, have never heard of Mohammed Al-Emadi. But his importance cannot be overestimated, because, as debkafile reveals here, he is the Persian Gulf Emirate of Qatar’s de facto ambassador to the Gaza Strip and to Israel. He is moreover Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon’s secret weapon against Hamas’s terror tunnels. The impression gaining ground is that Yaalon has no answer to Israel’s security problems other than economic inducements to keep its enemies quiet.
DEBKAfile Special Report January 6, 2016

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report August 13, 2015

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 15, 2015
Following the US plan to deploy American advisers in “lily pad” bases to work with Iraqi troops near the frontlines, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has adopted a new strategy. debkafile reports exclusively that ISIS is turning to tunnel warfare in pursuit of guerrilla tactics on its active fronts in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Egyptian Sinai and the Gaza Strip. The jihadis were impressed by the effectiveness of the Hamas assault and smuggling tunnel system for effective assaults on Israel and Egyptian forces in Sinai and took a leaf out of their book.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report April 20, 2015
Local reports of mysterious underground explosions in northern Israeli locations on the Lebanese border are confirmed by Israeli troops on field exercises in the neighborhood. They attest to heavy earthmoving equipment, explosions, burrowing and shaking ground on the Lebanese side of the border, giving the area the appearance of a huge subterranean building site. debkafile: Hizballah has undoubtedly taken a leaf out of the Hamas book of terror and mobilized fully and efficiently for a major tunnel-building project. Israel seems curiously passive in the face of its enemy’s dangerous enterprise.
DEBKAfile Special Report January 19, 2015
Israeli military chiefs are gearing up for an early Hizballah cross-border attack on Upper or Western Galilee in response to the helicopter strike which Sunday, Jan. 18, killed 5 Hizballah and 6 Iranian officers, including Iranian general Mohammad Ali Allah Dadi. Tehran also promised retribution. Monday noon, security units in Galilee were put on alert for defending the population of a quarter of a million against attack. debkafile: Even more than Hizballah’s rockets, Israelis in the north dread terrorist invasions from Lebanon through Hamas-style tunnels.
IDF quietly carves out 1-3km security strip while pulling troops out of Gaza. A humanitarian truce declared
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis August 4, 2014
While withdrawing the bulk of its ground troops from the Gaza Strip, the IDF has been quietly carving out an off-limits cordon sanitaire just inside the Gaza border. It is designed to be controlled from the outside by special forces and armored units on round-the-clock alert to bar hostile infiltrations and equipped with a battery of firing posts, sensors and drones. The strip runs 65km from Beit Hanoun in the north to Khan Younis in the south (see map). Gen. Sami Torjeman, OC Southern Command, told reporters that the soldiers had fought “stubbornly,” and “seriously impaired” Hamas’ strength. DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis July 29, 2014
That nine of the 10 Israeli servicemen killed in the counter-terror operation against Hamas Monday, July 28, died on Israeli soil was a wake-up call for Israel’s war leaders. It meant that Hamas had used the 22 days of combat to carry the contest from its own home ground into Israel by grabbing the tactical advantage of surprise, as illustrated by the tragic Nahal Oz tunnel episode which cost 5 Israeli lives. debkafile: The tunnel threat can’t be eliminated without first seizing Hamas war rooms, the hub of its elaborate underground network.

A decision to push ahead for the next stage of Israel’s counter-terror offensive in the Gaza Strip was widely expected Monday night, July 28, after a day of deadly coordinated attacks by Hamas, supposedly a ceasefire day, cost 10 soldiers’ lives. The IDF was braced to respond operationally by advancing to the next stage of its counter-terror campaign. But the order did not come. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon continued to clutch at the straw of a viable ceasefire – even though Hamas has violated every truce.
IDF set for electronic and signals control of Hamas, Islamic Jihad command centers, after rocket fire
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 26, 2014
Before it ended with Hamas rocket fire Saturday night, July 26, the 12-hour Israel-Hamas ceasefire offered Israeli intelligence a rare opportunity for collecting enemy data. In the heat of battle, the IDF and its clandestine arms were unable to gain electronic and SIGINT access to the underground Hamas and Islamic Jihad command and control centers, which appear to be well equipped with complex tactical and encrypted communications systems. Now they must go for Hamas’ sophisticated intelligence production processing system, elements of which may have broken surface during the ceasefire.
