The US, Israel and the Palestinian resume talks Wednesday, Aug. 14, in deep confusion, senior Israeli officials told debkafile. The US chair “appears to be at sea on which issue for leading off.” They refer to John Kerry’s proposal for the US and Israel to determine security arrangements along the Jordan River and the West Bank without Palestinian involvement as a non-starter. It has encouraged Mahmoud Abbas to rule out any Israeli presence on the West Bank – a line even more extreme than that taken by Yasser Arafat in 2000.

President Barack Obama is about to withhold the US veto from a Palestinian-Arab motion due to be tabled at the UN Security Council condemning Israel for its settlement policy in the West Bank and Jerusalem, debkafile's Washington sources report. If he does, he will be the first US president to let an anti-Israel motion go through the Security Council and building on the West Bank and even in the forty-year old suburbs of East Jerusalem would become illegal.
