The highly advanced Russian S-400 anti-air missiles at the Khmeimin base, Russia’s military enclave in Syria, combined with Russia electronic warfare equipment, have effectively transformed most of Syrian air space into a no-fly zone. Since the missiles were deployed Wednesday, Nov. 25, the US and Turkey have suspended their air strikes over Syria, including bombardments of Islamic State targets. Both are wary of their planes being shot down by the S-400, against which the US, Turkish and Israeli air forces have no practical experience. US attacks on ISIS in Iraq continue.

Russia launched electronic warfare against Turkey Friday, Nov. 27 - two days after its bombers began smashing every Turkish vehicle present in Syria and destroying their main border crossing. Their bitter verbal and military showdown spiraled to the point of Tayyip Erdogan warning Vladimir Putin “not to play with fire.” Putin refused to meet the Turkish president at the Paris climate conference until he apologizes for the downing of the Russian jet this week. The state of war between them is very real though undeclared.

Syrian media reported an Israeli air force attack Sunday, Nov. 1, after two sorties Friday night against Syrian army and Hizballah bases in the Qalamoun Mountains on the Lebanese border. The IDF declined to confirm or deny these reports. Syrian sources described a large number of Israeli airplanes as bombing a Hizballah unit in the village of El Ain in northern Lebanon and the arms depot of the Syrian army’s 155th Brigade at Al-Katifa. The two targets are 70 km apart, therefore two key points along the Iranian arms supply route to Hizballah.

Moscow has augmented its military presence in Syria and Iraq with two state-of-the-art weapons: Ilyushin-20 (IL-20 Coot) surveillance planes in both countries and, nine Borisoglebsk 2 electronic warfare systems atop a Syria peak. Both are among the most sophisticated of their kind. Last week, after Baghdad gave Moscow permission to use its Al Taqaddum air base, the Russian spy plane first sighted in Syria was spotted in Iraq. The electronic warfare system is capable of neutralizing air and ground military operations of US-led operations forces in Syria and Iraq by jamming almost any radio signal.

The US will not review its reconnaissance drone flights over Iran for fear they will also be downed and captured like the RQ-170. Iran could not have accomplished this coup alone because it would have required the technology for filtering through billions of coded communications relayed from Langley to satellites and cracking the coded links from Langley to one satellite and from satellite to drone.
