Kiev bows to Moscow, devolves near-autonomous powers on restive pro-Russian regions
DEBKAfile Special Report April 12, 2014

The Ukrainian government has offered sweeping autonomous powers to restive, pro-Russian regions as a concession to Moscow's demands. Acting prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk told regional leaders and businessmen Friday, April 11 in the eastern town of Donetsk, where pro-Russian separatists have declared a People’s Republic, that he is ready to consider a law on referendums. He is trying to avert Ukraine’s breakup into pro-Western European and pro-Russian regions by a gesture that is likely a Western trial balloon for Moscow.

Moshe Ya'alon vs John Kerry
Why doesn’t Netanyahu back Ya’alon? Other prominent ME voices fault Obama’s policies too
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis March 22, 2014

Israel’s Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon has won little backing at home for his outspoken remarks against US policies. Up until Saturday night, March 22, Binyamin Netanyahu let him face the music alone when John Kerry demanded an apology – and even when the State Dept dismissed his clarifications to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel as not enough. debkafile: But Ya'alon is good company in the region, where Saudi King Abdullah, his intelligence chief Prince Bandar, Egyptian ruler Gen. Abdel-Fatteh El-Sisi and others slam US policies even more vigorously.

Vladimir Putin in bitter assault on America
After a harshly anti-American speech to Russian parliament, Putin signed the Crimean treaty
DEBKAfile Special Report March 18, 2014

After defending Crimea’s referendum as adhering to “all international norms,” Russian  President Vladimir Putin declared Tuesday, March 18,  that Russia would henceforth strongly defend its national interests against the “cold war tactics” practiced by the United States and the West. He complained Moscow had sought dialogue with the West, but was “cheated all the time.” When he accused America of practicing the “law of the strong,” he was cheered by the packed Russian lower house. He ended the session by signing the Crimean annexation treaty.

US, Russian, Chinese military satellites hunt MH370 over Central Asia. Is it readied for a terrorist attack?
DEBKAfile Special Report March 16, 2014

The US, Russia and China Sunday, March 16 contributed military satellites to the search for the Malaysian Boeing 777, missing without a trace for nine days with 239 people aboard. debkafile: The hunt focuses increasingly on some unknown derelict airfield in remote Central Asia, with the investigative accent on the contents of the cargo hold or a possible hijacking by terrorists to prepare for a major attack. Were they Uyghur separatists or others? Was the plane downed by cyber means? And were the pilots complicit in a plot to make Flight MH370 vanish?

Crimea votes to quit Ukraine under guns of Russian tanks
DEBKAfile Special Report March 15, 2014

Russian military movements and strength around Crimea do not exceed the level for securing the referendum taking place on the peninsula Sunday, March 16 against possible Ukrainian or Western disruptions. There are no signs of Russia planning to invade other parts of Ukraine.  Neither have Ukraine’s European neighbors or the US bases on their soil declared unusual military preparedness. The Ukraine army is likewise stationary. But one or more of these forces may snap into unforeseen action during the referendum or after it’s over.
