Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas’ motion to dictate a timeline for Israel’s withdrawal to pre-1967 lines and a Palestinian state was defeated at the UN Security Council. Its re-submission next year in the hope of a more pro-Palestinian Security Council lineup will be just as problematic. So will Abbas’ threat to bring Israel before the international court for alleged war crimes. For Prime Minister Netanyahu, the vote was a campaign coup against his rivals' charge that he leads Israel into diplomatic isolation.

Israel recently complained to Washington about the renting of hotel suites in Jerusalem for undercover agents to spy on a secret military installation used by high Israeli officials for private consultations. However, the Americans and other interested parties keep on looking for holes in these barriers - and so the contest goes on.
