Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Wednesday, Jan. 13, released 10 US sailors, 9 men and a woman, who were seized a day earlier with their two patrol boats and held for interrogation as suspected spies. An IRGC statement read out on Iranian state TV said the sailors had been released back into international waters after the US had apologized and clarified the incursion was unintentional. The boats were sized shortly before sanctions were due to be lifted Friday, Jan. 15.

The US Navy took over Monday, March 17 a North Korean-flagged tanker carrying Libyan crude loaded from a rebel-hold port in eastern Libya. Washington said the tanker, seized in international waters off Cyprus, was a pirate or rogue vessel.  President Obama ordered the operation to return the oil to the Libyan government. debkafile: Libya’s government is hardly stable and has not governed the eastern region since NATO overthrew Muammar Qaddafi nearly three years ago. Separatist militias there run a major world black markets for weapons.

The US investigation has still not come up with any motive for the former Navy Reservist, Aaron Alexis, 34, who was scheduled to begin work this month for a Navy subcontractor, to embark on a shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard Monday, Sept. 16. He indiscriminately murdered 12 people and injured many more in just a few minutes at a sprawling installation just 3 km from the Capitol. The gunman finally died in a shootout with police. A horrified Washington stays on high security alert.
