DEBKAfile Special Report May 16, 2016
The defeat that Iran and Hizballah suffered on May 6 in a battle at the Syrian village of Khan Touman showed they cannot win the war for Syria’s President Assad. Seven days after the clash, the commander of Hizballah’s forces in Syria, Mustafa Bader Al-din, was killed in a ground-to-ground missile strike near the Damascus international airport. Later claims by various sources that he was killed in the battle were attempts to conceal the two biggest military blows suffered by the Iranians and Hizballah in Syria.

President Putin this week sent Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to Tehran to unsnarl his blueprint for a solution of the Syrian crisis from the blockage placed in its path by none other than Bashar Assad, who refuses to hear of Moscow’s proposals for a political formula for ending the war, or even a ceasefire. debkafile reports that Assad has quietly gained Tehran’s support for his negativism, causing strains between Moscow, Damascus and Tehran that are blowing back on the working relations between the Russian, Iranian and Syrian commands running the Syrian war.

An agreement for the cessation of hostilities in Syria was announced in Munich early Friday, Feb. 12. DEBKAfile Exclusive Report February 3, 2016
Russia is determined to bomb Syrian rebels into submission by a massive aerial campaign, comparable to the American 2003 “shock and awe” offensive over Baghdad. Only this time, it is Russia which is invading Syria. Tuesday, Feb. 2, saw a wave of air strikes, for which heavy Tupolev Tu-22M strategic bombers flew in from their base in Russia. President Vladimir is not deterred by the hundreds of civilian casualties caused in these raids, nor by rebel groups’ threat to walk out of the Geneva conference because he knows Barack Obama is behind him.

He is already studying a short list of candidates as Bashar Assad's successor. This issue also reveals US-Russian plans for eradicating ISIS by the targeted date of July 1.

Russian, Syrian, Iranian and Hizballah troops were taking up positions Monday, Jan. 18, for a massive offensive to retake Aleppo, Syria’s second city, hoping to break the backs of rebel resistance. A victory in Aleppo (prewar population: 1 million) is expected in Moscow, Tehran and Damascus to reverse the tide of the war and force the Syrian rebels to accept that their insurgency is at an end and their only remaining option is to join the Russian peace process. Two novel Russian robot systems will take part in the offensive.
DEBKAfile Special Report December 30, 2015
