Its reign of terror is spreading out from Iraq and Syria and creeping into southern Jordan, the Israeli Negev and Egyptian Sinai, then on to Libya and over to Tunisia and Algeria, covering a distance of 4,000 km. This followed the plan Saudi Arabia developed with Moscow for re-establishing Russian military advisers in Egypt and for America’s replacement by Russia as Egypt’s main arms supplier. The Russians have listed four preferred locations on the Mediterranean coast for their new naval port facilities: Alexandria, Damietta, Rosetta or Port Said.

Egyptian and Israeli forces raised alert levels Friday, July 5, after the Muslim Brotherhood declared a revolt against the army for ousting Mohamed Morsi on July 3. A “War Council” established in Sinai formed a coalition with Hamas, Jihad Islami and al-Qaeda-linked Salafists, following which gunmen mounted a multiple attack in northern Sinai. Egyptian Patriot anti-missile batteries and anti-air weapons systems were posted to protect Suez Canal shipping from rocket fire. An Egyptian officer warned the army would forcibly prevent the rise of an “Islamic caliphate” in Sinai.

Qatar is pouring petrodollars into Egypt to outdo Saudi Arabia’s bid for a land bridge to Egypt and to gain high-end assets such as control of the Suez Canal and the acquisition of Egyptian coastal resorts. Qatari Prime Minister Hamad Bin Jassim said the emirate would double its grants and loans to Egypt from $2.5 to $5 billion bringing the grand total in a single year to $7 billion. Hamad denied this generosity was tied to plans to invest in the Suez Canal, but no one believed him, especially in Riyadh.
