Syrian war as testing ground for Russia’s latest sea and air weapons

Like other manufacturers of advanced military weaponry, Russia has sought - and found in the Syrian conflict - a live battleground for testing its latest and most advanced tools of war. The two most sophisticated Russian armaments tested are the Kalibr NK cruise missile and the Sukhoi Su-34 Fullback fighter-bomber. The Kalibr was fired first from a surface warship on the Caspian Sea, then from a Kilo-class submarine in the E. Mediterranean. Teh Russians have shown NATO a 2,500km long chain of warships and cruise missiles running from Kaliningrad to the eastern Mediterranean.

US military sources revealed Monday, Dec. 8, that Israel’s air strikes near Damascus the day before wiped out Russian hardware including missiles dispatched post haste to help Syria and Hizballah frustrate a US no-fly zone plan for northern Syria. The Kremlin has warned that any no-fly zone over Syria would be treated as direct US intervention in the Syria war, and incur Russian military intervention. The advanced anti-air missiles and radar Moscow sent Syria and Hizballah to back up this warning were destroyed by Israel. Damascus threatens Israel with “unimaginable harm.”

Israel’s air strikes near Damascus international airport and the Syrian-Lebanese border Sunday, Dec. 7, are depicted by Middle East sources as Israel’s first overt military clash with Russia in the course of the Syrian war. Those sources assert that the strikes demolished components of Russian SA-25 or other types of top-line anti-air missile systems that Moscow had shipped in for Syria and the Lebanese Hizballah. The raid came less than 24 hours after Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov shook hands with Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.

Western sources report that Israeli Air Force strikes in Lebanon and Syria overnight Monday, Feb. 24 came on the heels of the first use in the three-year Syrian war of a Russian-made nuclear-capable Tochka (Point) surface missile - NATO-coded SS-21 Scarab - which carries a 480-kilo warhead with a range of 70 km. One or more missile were fired earlier Monday by Syrian-Hizballah forces in the battle for Yabroud. Lebanese sources report different IAF targets: a cluster of five Hizballah command posts in the Beqaa Valley, or arms convoys moving between Lebanon and Syria.

Hizballah began removing rockets and fighting units out of their South Lebanon positions opposite Israel and transferring them to the Homs front as back-up for Syrian forces. This attests to the rising scope and fury of the Syrian army’s onslaught on rebel forces.
