The highly advanced Russian S-400 anti-air missiles at the Khmeimin base, Russia’s military enclave in Syria, combined with Russia electronic warfare equipment, have effectively transformed most of Syrian air space into a no-fly zone. Since the missiles were deployed Wednesday, Nov. 25, the US and Turkey have suspended their air strikes over Syria, including bombardments of Islamic State targets. Both are wary of their planes being shot down by the S-400, against which the US, Turkish and Israeli air forces have no practical experience. US attacks on ISIS in Iraq continue.
