The IDF spokesman reported Monday night, Aug. 8 that an Israeli Air force Apache helicopter had crashed on a test flight for checking the Apache fleet’s fitness for operations upon returning to the Ramon Air Base in the Negev. The helicopter belonging to the 190th Squadron reported a technical misfunction and a few minutes later at 21:01 hours crashed between the two runways of the base.

The highly advanced Russian S-400 anti-air missiles at the Khmeimin base, Russia’s military enclave in Syria, combined with Russia electronic warfare equipment, have effectively transformed most of Syrian air space into a no-fly zone. Since the missiles were deployed Wednesday, Nov. 25, the US and Turkey have suspended their air strikes over Syria, including bombardments of Islamic State targets. The Italian magazine “The Aviationist,” showed them escorting heavy Russian bombers, including the Tupolev TU-160, the heaviest, fastest and most destructive bomber ever built, on missions no more than 150 km from Israel’s northern border. Israeli fighter jets flew passes over the Golan Monday, Feb. 23 as a warning to Syrian helicopters and fighter planes to stop encroaching on the no-fly zone, in violation of standing Israeli-Syrian armistice agreements, debkafile reports. The Syrian warplanes planes dropped barrel bombs on Syrian rebel forces holding Quneitra. Spotters counted at least 30 bombs dropped by helicopters under cover of Syrian air force jets.
