Israeli-Hizballah tensions were heightened further this week by the deadly car bomb attack near Hizballah’s Baalbek base Tuesday, two days after a Lebanese solder murdered Israeli Master Sgt. Shlomi Cohen Monday. debkafile: Both apparently interconnected incidents occurred after Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah paid a secret visit to Tehran last week. Hizballah and Iran are actively considering reprisals against the intelligence bodies terrorizing Hizballah operatives and command posts as well as Iranian targets - clearly armed with precise information about their movements and whereabouts.

Israel appeared ready to accept the Lebanese explanation that a member of its armed forces acted on his own initiative and “did not consult his station" before shooting to kill Israeli Navy Master Sgt. Shlomi Cohen, 31, Sunday, Dec. 16. At the UNIFIL inquiry they attended Monday with Israeli liaison officers, the Lebanese called it a one-time incident. debkafile: This did not answer the questions surrounding the attack, the second in three days. However, the US, France and the UN leaned heavily on Jerusalem to de-escalate the incident.

Saturday morning, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman visited the site of the Lebanese-Israeli border clash of Tuesday, Aug. 1. debkafile reveals that Iranian intelligence and commando officers toured the border area 24 hours before him, part of a high-ranking Iranian delegation led by Ali Akbar Velayati which rushed to Beirut after the clash. Their Lebanese army escort included heads of the same 9th battalion which started the clash by shooting across the border and killing Lt. Col. Dov Harari.

Tuesday, Aug. 3, in a heavy exchange of cross-border fire, Lt. Col. Dov Harari, 45, from Netanya, battalion commander of the eastern Israel-Lebanese border sector, was killed on Israeli soil in what Gen. Gady Eisencott, OC Northern Command, called an unprovoked "sniper ambush" set by the Lebanese army.
