Not a single competent army capable of launching all-out war on ISIS in Syria or Iraq is to be found between the Jordan and the Euphrates and Tigris to the east, or Ramadi and Riyadh to the south. UK ex-army chief Lord Dannatt called for 5,000 British ground troops to fight the Islamists in Syria and Iraq.
DEBKAfile Special Report May 21, 2015
The fall of Damascus and Baghdad, or large slices thereof, to the rapacious Islamic State, is no longer the subject of strategic forecasts, but here and now. It is the price the region is paying for President Barack Obama’s single-minded obsession with détente with Tehran and a nuclear accord. Ramadi’s fall in Iraq and Palmyra’s in Syria proved ISIS’s ability to rock the Middle East to its foundations. Watching the threats closing in, Jerusalem, Amman and Riyadh grasp they may have to contend alone – not just with Iran but also with ISIS.

debkafile reveals that a large-scale Iranian airlift is flying thousands of Shiite fighters to the Syrian Mediterranean port of Latakia to reinforce Syrian forces defeated in the last 48 hours by rebels at Aleppo and to save them from retreat. This development is seriously disturbing Israel’s army chiefs. They reckon that Tehran’s promptness in sending over thousands of foreign troops to save Assad’s army, would apply equally to a possible setback in the offensive led by Iranian Revolutionary Guards officers to capture the Golan town of Quneitra across from Israel’s lines.
