debkafile's military sources report that Iran's defense minister Mostafa Najar travels to Moscow Monday, Feb. 16 to tie up the last ends of Tehran's purchase of a brigade of advanced Russian S-300 air defense missiles to guard its nuclear sites.
Their acquisition would make an air attack on Iran's nuclear facilities extremely difficult and dangerous - if not impossible.

Iran's government spokesman is quoted as saying Saturday, Jan. 31 that capitalist thought and the system of domination have failed. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of Khomeini's overthrow of the shah that Iran's Islamic revolution was not limited to its borders. His response to the US president Barack Obama's overtures was a demand that America apologize for 60 years of "crimes against Iran" and its new president carry out a "deep and fundamental change."

Iran Challenges Obama by Hiking Tensions on Israel's Borders

The strategy the Islamic regime has charted for the new US president hinges on fanning tensions on Israel's northern and southern borders while putting a damper on the various Middle East peace initiatives. Syria was therefore discouraged from returning to its indirect peace track with Israel and Hamas ordered to boycott Egypt's bid to patch up the quarrel between the Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah.

An Iranian aid ship due to dock in Gaza on Jan 6<br/>

Iran's Red Crescent will send an aid shipment to the Gaza strip "in the face of the Israeli blockade," according to a state broadcast Friday. The cargo of 2,000 tonnes of food and medicines accompanied by 12 Iranian doctors will sail from Bandar Abbas, HQ of the Revolutionary Guards Navy, and arrive Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Announcement of the shipment was made by the Bandar Abbas provincial Red Crescent director Ahmad Navvab, in order to deter the Israeli navy from interfering with or seizing the vessel.

Tehran deflects Hamas SOS to threaten intervention against an Israeli attack

Hamas appealed to Tehran and Hizballah Thursday, Dec. 25, asking for Iran's support by threatening to intervene if Israel launched an attack on the Gaza Strip, debkafile's Iranian sources report.
Tehran did not to reject the SOS out of hand but inform Hamas that Iran was awaiting developments and closely following Israel's military operation to see how it evolved.
Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert strongly urged Gazan Palestinians to stand up to Hamas and stop them shooting missiles to ward warding off an Israeli military operation.

Russian S-300 anti-air weapon already delivered to Iran

Despite the efforts of US and Israeli leaders, Moscow is delivering the highly sophisticated air defense S-300 system to Iran for securing its nuclear and strategic sites against potential attack.
The RIA news agency confirmed this Wednesday night, Dec. 18.
debkafile's military sources disclose the S-300 deliveries began two weeks ago.
While both the Bush administration and Israeli leaders insisted a military option remained on the table if Iran persisted in its nuclear weapons program, neither took into account that Tehran was not deterred or standing idle.

Iran test-fires new surface-to-surface missile from warship<br/>

Tehran claims the new Nasr-2 surface-to-surface missile was fired Dec. 6 during its six-day naval exercise from a warship in the Sea of Oman and destroyed a target 30 km away.
The games, launched with 60 warships last Tuesday were dubbed a war readiness exercise. They cover 50,000 square miles of the Persian Gulf, Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz which Iran threatens to block if attacked.

In close sync, Tehran and Damascus dismiss nuclear watchdog findings

Iran tests ways of recovering weapons-grade uranium from spent nuclear fuel

This intelligence assessment, disclosed to AP by a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), indicates that the Iranians are testing ways of using nuclear waste from the Bushehr reactor, which the Russians have pledged to finish by the end of the year or March, 2009, at latest.
Moscow has provided the necessary fuel. Both Moscow and Iran claim the Bushehr reactor is purely for peaceful purposes.
US intelligence now reckons Iran will have between one and three nuclear bombs by the end of 2009.
