As of Saturday, Iran, Syria and the Lebanese Hizballah are tightly meshed into a combined Tehran-led front against any war contingency, bringing the Iranian peril right up to Israel's back door. Yet Israel's leaders made only a feeble responseto this development.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 23, 2008
Sunday night, May 11, the Israeli army was poised to strike Hizballah. The Shiite militia was winding up its takeover of West Beirut and battling pro-government forces in the North. When he opened the regular cabinet meeting Sunday, May 11, prime minister Ehud Olmert had already received the go-ahead from Washington for a military strike to halt the Hizballah advance. The message said that President George W. Bush would not call off his visit to Israel to attend its 60th anniversary celebrations and would arrive as planned Wednesday, May 14 - even if the Israeli army was still fighting in Lebanon and Hizballah struck back against Tel Aviv and Ben-Gurion airport.
Prime minister Ehud Olmert, defense minister Ehud Barak and foreign minister Tzipi Lvini, the only ministers in the picture, decided not to intervene in Lebanon's civil conflict. Iran's surrogate army consequently waltzed unchecked to its second victory in two years over the United States and Israel.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 18, 2008
Bashar Assad's strategists are not losing a moment to cash in on the abundant conspiracy theories surrounding the death, to plant one of its own: Mughniyeh, they say, was killed in their capital by their Lebanese enemies.
Therefore, it is feared in Washington and Jerusalem that, while plotting revenge on Israel, Hizballah, backed by the Syrian commando units, will launch attacks on Lebanese national intelligence and Druze targets in Beirut and Mt. Lebanon - they point a finger at Druze leader Walid Jumblatt. Their immediate goal would be to overthrow the pro-Western, anti-Syrian government headed by Fouad Siniora and stir up a new civil war. The door would then re-open for Syria to make a comeback to the troubled country and move troops in for the first time since they were thrown out in 2005, in contravention of UN Security Council resolutions.
Syria's machinations give substance to Director of US National Intelligence Mike McConnell's assertion to Fox TV Sunday, Feb. 17, that, while Hizballah is blaming Israel, "...there's some evidence that it may have been internal Hezbollah. It may have been Syria.
