Thousands of al Qaeda terrorists are on the loose in US and Europe – under the radar of Western intelligence
DEBKAfile DEBKA Weekly June 3, 2014
When French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said, ”We’ve never faced a challenge on this scale,” he was referring to around 11,000 Islamist terrorists on a constant commute between the Middle East, North America and Europe primed for lethal action. Never has the West seen the likes of a terrorist army on this scale – even when Osama bin Laden was recruiting - as the latest DEBKA Weekly out Friday showed with facts and figures. And never has Western intelligence had less control of a peripatetic mass of homegrown malefactors.

The US-EU decision to continue funding the Hamas-backed Palestinian government is a landmark: For the first time, the US and Europe will be bankrolling an organization they have listed as terrorist, as well as its armed militia, the Ezz e-Din al-Qassam. debkafile: Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s comment that he is “deeply troubled” underscores his government’s disarray over this development. Tuesday, June 3, he confided to advisers that he will not make the mistake made by his predecessor Ehud Olmert and let Palestinian elections take place, knowing Hamas will sweep the board.

Wednesday, June 4, President Poroshenko has a date in Warsaw with US President Barack Obama, who is coming to assure East European leaders that America is there to defend them against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s designs. Obama will find its leaders hard to convince. He left them, as well as Middle East leaders, deeply worried by the policy messages he delivered at West Point last Wednesday, when he said that for the “best American hammer not every problem is a nail” and advocated instead isolation for Russia and diplomacy for Iran.

Crimea’s secession to Russia is just one example. More boundaries once carved in stone are melting away in the heat of unresolved conflicts, as DEBKA Weekly shows in its coming issue out Friday. Iran, Syria, Hizballah and Al Qaeda’s ISIS terrorists are all messing with the borders of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Israel – and each other. When President Barack Obama comes to Riyadh with a promise of US support for the oil kingdom’s stability, he will step into a landscape of moving boundaries.

Libyan Ruler Muammar Qaddafi's threat to "throw ourselves on Europe like swarms of locusts or bees" to attack "your homes, your offices, your families" may be meant to scare NATO off its coming all-out offensive to kill or oust him – or may be for real. If forced to quit, debkafile reports he could seek asylum with friendly African Sahel tribes like the al Qaeda-linked Tuareg, which also provide him with mercenaries. From there, he could orchestrate a campaign of terror.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis May 10, 2011
NATO's lingering two-month campaign in Libya is whittling down Muammar Qaddafi's strength but also sapping its own. debkafile's military sources report that Washington and NATO HQ suspect Qaddafi is now getting early warning of incoming coalition strikes from advanced electronic devices newly installed at a foreign embassy in Tripoli. The fact remains that without substantial US military input NATO's European members cannot break Qaddafi's strength. Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf are taking note.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report October 5, 2010
debkafile's counter-terror sources are increasingly dubious of the imprecise American terror alert for Europe issued Oct. 3 by the US State Department. They commented Tuesday, Oct. 5, that the blanket US call for US travelers to watch out in public places and tourist sites all over Europe has little relation to their own data on existing terrorist threats. France, where 14 terror suspects were arrested Monday and which is fighting AQIM, is a separate case.
