A key Hizballah security official, Mohammad Shawraba, 42, is in custody in Beirut charged with betraying secrets. debkafile: As manager of Hizballah’s straw companies in Italy and Spain, he developed a taste for high living and used beautiful girls as bait for business transactions. In 2005, he fell for one of the girls and married her in 2007 without informing his bosses. After that, he spilled Hizballah’s secrets to his wife. It is now clear she was a spy, but Hizballah, Tehran and Shawraba himself have no clue to her identity or employers.

Israel recently complained to Washington about the renting of hotel suites in Jerusalem for undercover agents to spy on a secret military installation used by high Israeli officials for private consultations. But other less friendly Western spy agencies caught on and took suites at the same location. To combat the exposure of its secrets, Israel introduced “sterile spaces” impenetrable to illicit penetration as well as tricks of misdirection. However, the Americans and other interested parties keep on looking for holes in these barriers - and so the contest goes on.
