Russia and US woo Saudis to help save Assad - albeit putting Israel and Jordan in danger from S. Syria
DEBKAfile Special Report August 9, 2015

Building on the nuclear accord, the Obama administration has been in close communion with Moscow and Tehran on moves to save the Assad regime as the key to ending the Syrian conflict and a united front against the Islamic State. This initiative was to have peaked at the Doha foreign ministers’ meeting on Aug. 3, except that it was blocked by Saudi refusal to acknowledge Assad. The US and Russia hope to change Riyadh’s mind when Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir visits Moscow on Aug. 11. But then, Israel and Jordan would face great peril from southern Syria.

DEBKAfile Special Report August 7, 2015

The Obama administration’s battle for congressional endorsement of the nuclear deal signed last month with Iran received a double reverse Friday, Aug. 7, when two influential Democrats, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is expected to take over as Senate Democratic leader in 2017, and New York Rep. Eliot Engel, the ranking Democrat of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced they would vote against the accord. They cited weaknesses of the inspection regime. Secretary of State John Kerry said he "profoundly disagrees" with their reasoning. But fellow Democratic lawmakers were impressed.

News flash for Obama: With or without a nuclear deal, Hizballah’s Iranian missiles threaten Tel Aviv
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis August 5, 2015

President Barack Obama missed the point by warning the 22 Jewish leaders invited to the White House Tuesday, Aug. 3, that if Congress strikes down the Iranian nuclear deal, …”Hizballah rockets will rain down on Tell Aviv” – not on New York. debkafile: Iranian-supplied rockets have repeatedly rained down on Israeli population centers from the 2006 Lebanese war and up to the July 2014 Gaza operation. They hang over Israel today, like yesterday and probably tomorrow, irrespective of whether Congress endorses or throws out Obama’s nuclear deal with Tehran, because they were never part of that deal.

Binyamin Netanyahu: Powers gambled on our future
Nuclear deal pushes Israel aside in Washington, raises Iran to leading US partner and ally
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis July 15, 2015

The Netanyahu government, like Saudi Arabia and Egypt, can only beat their heads futilely against the iron wall Barack Obama has built for Iran with the nuclear accord the six powers signed in Vienna Tuesday, July 14. Israel has the most to lose. It has been downgraded from its favored status in Washington and replaced by Iran. By this big geopolitical step, the US President has shifted the ground in the region, not only dumping Israel but the Arab world as a whole - and, incidentally, the Palestinians as well.

Iran crowned as top regional, nuclear-threshold power. Win for Obama, fiasco for Netanyahu
DEBKAfile Special Report July 14, 2015

In broad lines, the final nuclear deal, reached between six world powers and Iran in Vienna on Tuesday, July 14 -  after repeated hold-ups - grants Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. debkafile: The accord is a triumph for President Barack Obama’s policy of orienting US foreign policy on a rapprochement with Iran, while turning a cold shoulder to America’s traditional Middle East allies, Israel and Saudi Arabia. It anoints Tehran as leading regional power with its nuclear program intact – a major fiasco for Binyamin Netanyahu.

John Kerry returns to the Iran nuclear table
Kerry’s refusal to be “fixated” on Iran’s former nuclear misdeeds fits the US pattern of indulging Tehran
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis June 17, 2015

President Barack Obama is about to make his most substantial concession yet to Iran by agreeing to release only one part of their nuclear accord, while keeping the technical protocols secret. Senior US negotiator Wendy Sherman fought hard to get both parts released, but was overruled. The 50 pages of the nuclear accord’s practical annexes embody the adage that the devil is in the detail. But Obama may choose to keep it secret from Congress, the American public and US allies, while Iran is given free rein to pursue its objectives.
