After four mortar shells from Syria exploded in the northern Golan Friday, the Israeli army struck the positions on the other side of the border from which the shells were fired. They apparently strayed inadvertently across the border from the fighting in Syria, the IDF stated. None of the shells caused damage, but people were alarmed by sirens and the explosions. The army statement stressed that the IDF would not tolerate violations of Israeli sovereignty and holds the Syrian government responsible for actions emanating from its territory. While the IDF spokesman provided not information on the counter-attack, Syrian sources reported that Israel fired two rockets against a Syrian army position east of  Quneitra.
